Abstract

A vital part of human connection, humor can be used for self-expression, social bonding, and even criticism in addition to providing amusement. Humor is fundamentally a language-based art form, reflecting the vocabulary, structure, and cultural quirks of the communities that create it. Everyone laughs, so comedy may seem universal, but it actually depends a lot on culture. There are considerable linguistic and cultural differences in the ways that humor is conveyed, interpreted, and valued. This article will examine the ways in which language is used in humor across cultural boundaries, paying special emphasis to linguistic elements such as wordplay, timing, and cultural context.
