Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive overview of the core principles in language testing and assessment, which are crucial for ensuring that language tests are designed and implemented effectively. The article emphasizes the importance of aligning tests with their intended purpose, accurately reflecting course content and language proficiency, and minimizing external factors that may affect test performance. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of testing on teaching and learning, suggesting both positive and negative washback effects. It also discusses the value of using authentic materials in testing, providing students with clear, transparent information about the assessment process, and maintaining the security of test materials.
